The requested 5T Quantum Design SQUID susceptometer is required to replace a 13-year old, 0.1 T SQUID magnetometer, which is no longer supported by the manufacturer. The new instrument will continue as the University's workhorse for fundamental studies of the magnetic properties of superconducting and magnetic materials, the magnetic verification of new superconductors, and the magnetic characterisation of conventional and novel superconductors and magnetic compounds in single crystal, bulk and thin film forms. Suchmeasurements underpin almost every aspects of the University's major multidisciplinary -programme on superconductivity - ranging from fundamental science, chemical synthesis,improved processing and device applications. The enhanced sensitivity, improvedtemperature range and control, and ac modes of operation will greatly enhance the quality ofthe science that can be delivered. The modern design and automated software will alsosignificantly increase the efficiency and accuracy with which such measurements can bemade. The increased field will extend the use of the instrument to magnetics research - anotherarea of strength at Birmingham. It will also be used to investigate biomagnetic materials. Thefacility will be made available to other institutions and will be heavily involved incollaborative research.
