|
The Householder Symposium is the pre-eminent international conference in the area of numerical linear algebra. It is held at three-year intervals at different venues, alternating between Europe and North America (most recently in Whistler, Canada, Pontresina, Switzerland and Lake Arrowhead, USA) and attracts the leading researchers in the field from all over the world. We are delighted to have attracted this prestigious event to Scotland (the meeting was held in Oxford in 1981).The meetings, which last for five days, are restricted to 125 people and are intensive, with plenary talks during the day and special sessions in the evenings. The restriction on size is deliberately imposed to promote a workshop-like atmosphere, where those newer to the field can interact with more established researchers in a relatively informal setting. For similar reasons, there are no pre-invited plenary speakers: all delegates are selected by an international organising committee on the basis of the submission of extended abstracts, with the plenary speakers then selected from within their number.The meeting also sees the presentation of the Householder Prize for the best thesis in numerical linear algebra in the years between meetings.
