Summary on Grant Application Form
The development of a new laboratory within the new Centre for Mathematical Sciences provides us with accommodation to expand the scope and enhance the quality of experimental research within DAMTP. New initiatives, such as the establishment of the Schlumberger Chair of Complex Systems, are enabling innovative research in exciting areas such as complex materials and bio-dynamics, while the appointment in 2000 of two experimentalists to lectureships within DAMTP fuels a change in emphasis and a need to ensure the completion of the new laboratory does not stifle innovation through delay or lack of key services and equipment. The modest contribution requested from JREI will be combined with substantial external funding of equipment within the new GK Batchelor Laboratory to help take the Laboratory from a simple space to a fully functional, world-class research facility.
