Summary on Grant Application Form |
The equipment will replace currently-used 1960s X-ray diffractometer facilities, and will provide the rapid, reliable crystallographic characterisation of solid - materials that modern research programmes demand. In the MNIME Department the new equipment will underpin current research programmes concerned with the synthesis and characterisation (including structure determination) of new nitride-based ceramics, observation of structure in thin films and coatings, characterisation of PZT ceramics for sensor applications and analysis of gears. Dr S. Roy (Chemical & Process Engineering) requires good XRD facilities for determining structure in electrodeposited shape-memory thin films and metal-based multilayers. In the Chemistry department, the equipment will be used by Professor Clegg's group for studies of polycarboxylie acid derivatives, by Dr Errington for characterisation of a wide range of inorganic solids synthesised from alkoxide precursors; and by Drs Egerton and Christenson for photocatalytic work Professor Manning will apply the system to studies of mineralogy, soils, wastes (landfill, mineral scale, farm waste,) and marine sediments, for qualitative and titative phase analysis, and crystallite size determination.
