Summary on Grant Application Form
Gas-liquid flows are encountered in a wide variety of natural phenomena and technological applications. In particular, counter-current turbulent gas-liquid flow with the liquid flowing due to gravity, has been the subject of active research for several decades. This research has established that counter-current gas flow rate is increased, the liquid begins to travel upwards. Eventually, as the flow reverses very fast atomisation of the liquid into the gas phase occurs. Previous work in the area, however, has been largely experimental and has focused on developing empirical relaations that attempt to correlate the gas-liquid flooding transistion velocities as a function of the physical and geometrical parameters of the system. The proposed programme of work is a systematic analytical and numerical investigation of counter-current gas-liquid flow with particular emphasis on the linear and nonlinear stability of the initially flat gas-liquid interface.
