Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose the purchase at auction of the Scanditronix MC40 variable energy cyclotron which is currently in Minneapolis, its transportation to Birmingham, and its installation in place of the antiquated Radial Ridge Cyclotron. This will equip the Positron Imaging Centre with a reliable modern cyclotron, complementing the state of the art positron camera installed in 1999. The cyclotron will be used to generate all the radioactive tracers required to continue the existing studies of granular and multi-phase flow, and will enable the production of smaller and more robust tracer particles than is currently possible. The cyclotron will also be used by the Birmingham nuclear physics group to produce unstable nuclei for laser measurements of nuclear properties and for detector testing, by groups at Birmingham, Warwick and Leicester for studying radiation effects on proteins, glasses and semiconductors respectively, and will be made available to the wider UK community as a source of medium energy ion beams. In future (with further investment) the cyclotron may also be used for producing radioisotopes for medical use.
