Summary on Grant Application Form
The scheme developed in collaboration with government agencies, research organisations and key industries will provide high quality post-graduate training covering the specialist technical, economic and legislative issues of materials recycling, as well as developing personal transferable and management skills. As the economic value of the recycling industry grows, and the technical complexity of recycling of engineering components increases, driven by European Directives, there will be a real and growing need for well-trained graduates in both large companies and SMEs.Training will be in the form of one-week taught modules, making up 70 credits, covering the technical, economic and legal aspects of recycling, life cycle analysis and environmental issues, as well as professional, business and research skills. A major research project of 110 credits is then undertaken, in collaboration with an industrial or commercial partner. The scheme is designed to be multi-sectoral, and the range of projects on offer will reflect this. Originally to be delivered as a full-time course, we plan to develop teaching material that will allow part-time and distance learning options in the future.The training package will build on the existing post-graduate training provision already existing within the materials Department at Swansea. The excellent teaching and research infrastructure developed for our existing EngD, IGDS and MRes schemes will provide an ideal environment for this scheme.
