Summary on Grant Application Form
Bioinformatics provides the tools essential to exploit DNA and protein sequence and expression data. However, there is a national shortage of the people skilled in bioinformatics needed by pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and associated software companies. The part-time modular MTP in bioinformatics proposed here, would complement the small number of existing bioinformatics MSc's in two important ways. First, its new mode of delivery (in week-long modules) will offer this timely training to scientists already employed in industry, whatever their location. Second, the proposed MTP targets students with a stronger mathematical and computational background than existing MSc's. Advanced modules will concentrate on the mathematical, statistical and computational tools needed for the next generations of bioinformatics problems. The MTP will build on the university's strengths in bioinformatics research and its experience of running successful EPSRC MTPs.
