Summary on Grant Application Form
Microporous solids are an important class of materials with industrial applications in ion exchange, catalysis, adsorption and separation processes. Traditionally the term porous materials, when used in this sense, has referred to aluminosilicates and metal phosphates. The aim of this proposal is produce new porous metal phosphonate materials. The difference between these materials and traditional zeotypes is that the internal surface is lined with organic functional groups. These materials will then combine the desirable structural properties associated with inorganic frameworks with the breadth of chemical functionality offered by organic chemistry. The materials will be based on phosphonates of metals such as zinc, aluminium, cobalt, titanium and ruthenium. The phosphonate groups will be bi- or tri functional, and chosen in such a way that the internal characteristics (acidity, hydrophobicity / hydrophilicity) can be tailored to specific reactions. The new materials prepared in this project will be characterised by X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. Their physical properties (thermal behaviour and porosity) will be investigated and a preliminary study of their catalytic properties will be carried out. Keywords: Chemistry, Synthesis, Materials, Catalysis
