We propose the development of a novel coordination model and related software system. The model will formalize and generalize a consistent approach to classifying multiple view visualization. We will demonstrate the utility of our approach by implementing an experimental but practical visualization system based on the model. Coordination is a new area of interesting and exciting research in visualization, as the systems allow the user to rapidly explore and find unexpected and perhaps intriguing results in their data. There are various coordination systems available, but these tend to operate in a limited way over a few reduced views, and none of have suitably general underlying formal coordination model.In this research we will investigate coupling methodologies that may be used within a generalized visualization exploration environment to allow the user freedom to create and couple any number of instances, views and filtrations of their information. Thus, this is novel and new research. The underlying formalization result will enable the principles investigated in this research to be evaluated and used by other developers. This is timely research, due to the recent high level of interest shown in coordinated visualization systems by both researchers and users. We believe we are well suited to carry out this work given our strong track records of research in models, multiple views and coordination.
