Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project aims to provide much-needed laboratory data on the multi-mode response of along tension riser in a non-uniform current by making use of an opportunity provided by EC funding for access to the Delta Flume at Delft Hydraulics. The novel experiment proposed draws on our experience of working there, and is designed to overcome the difficulties that have limited the impact of previous measurements. An instrumented model riser 28mm in diameter and almost 14m long will be mounted on the carriage of the Delta Flume. Its response to vortex excitation will be measured in a nonuniform current consisting of zero velocity over the upper part (where the riser will be inside a water-filled cylinder fixed on the carriage), and a uniform current over the lower part (generated by the effect of moving the carriage along the tank at a steady speed). The multi-mode displacement of the riser will be measured at a large number of elevations by means of strain gauges (to avoid problems associated with the use of accelerometers), and the results will be compared with the predictions of industry standard and research codes. Some of the experiments will be repeated after bumps have been attached to the riser, to assess their performance as a vortex suppression device.
