Summary on Grant Application Form
This work is aimed at addressing the controversial question of what is the relevant length scale for perpendicular transport in thin magnetic films. Previously it has been understood that the spin-diffusion length determined the transport but we have recently published work that suggests that the mean free path plays an important role. We wish to settle the question with a series of experiments designed to show mean free path effects. By using magnetically hard and soft layers, the switching of individual layers in a stack can be controlled. In this way it is possible to view the effects of changing the order of layers within the stack and using this to test the idea that the mean free path determines the transport. The mean free path will be varied by changing the thickness of the layers or by adding impurities. The data will be modelled using the theory developed by Professor Wiser.
