Recent technological developments have led to industrial and academic interest in the convergence of web and broadcast media, toward the integration of TV programmes and interactive content. The high production cost of TV content prohibits the development of a large corpus of further content for the interactive medium. We term this the content economy problem. We propose to use interactive narrative, made possible by digital television, to offer a large number of engaging experiences from limited content. We believe the synergy of the Narrative Constraint Matrix and the Narrative Knowledge Engine will solve the basic problems of interactive narrative. The research will produce two demonstrators based on the Tiny Planets 3D computer animation series. The first demonstrator will choose appropriate scripts of canned streamed content based on the knowledge encoded about narrative and preferences of the target viewers. The second will support the genuine creation of novel narrative threads. These will be evaluated with the target age group, a primary criteria being their ability to stimulate interest. The final generalized methodology and toolkit will enable broadcasters and other content providers to create interactive narrative systems.
