The prime objective of the proposed research is to explore the role of context sharing in supporting cooperation in ubiquitous computing environments. This exploration is motivated by the growing maturity of context-sensing technologies and the fact that previous research in this area has been of a point-sampled nature. The term context sharing is used in a broad sense and encompasses both the sharing of context with others, e.g. colleagues, and the sharing of context with services that can make active use of the context in order to support cooperation. The project's main focus is to investigate the Human Factors issues that arise when sharing context, the two broad issues being privacy of personal context and disruption to users that receive inappropriate contextual information. However, the detailed implications of sharing context are likely to change depending on the actual approach used and the usage domain. To address this issue, we intend to produce a design space for classifying different approaches to sharing context. Application instances taken from these classifications will then be built, deployed and evaluated using 'field-trial' based techniques. The development of these applications will attempt to utilise the existing development tools available from both CSCW and Context-aware computing communities.
