Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposal is the application of recently developed variational methods to localisation and other post-buckling phenomena in constrained rods. The recent work of both the applicant and the proposed Fellow have led, from different angles, to the study of critical failure loads in long thin structures. A joining of forces is proposed to tackle the problem of the recently discovered helical collapse of a rod constrained to lie on a rigid cylinder, a problem with important industrial applications. The envisaged research will also launch a timely attack on questions of stability of localised solutions in long constrained structures, a question of obvious importance in applications but hitherto mostly avoided.
