Summary on Grant Application Form |
This programme aims to increase the efficiency of thin film photovoltaic solar cells and their manufacturing processes through provision of a versatile and detailed computer modelling system enabling the design of cost efficient photovoltaic cells. The expansion of the 5i semiconductor industry has been supported by many modelling packages that account for device fabrication as well as their final properties. We expect a similar successful package for thin film solar cells to be developed within this programme, promoting this area of technology.A new generation of simulation code will be produced. Recently acquired fundamental materials data will be exploited in the development of computer models for both cell fabrication (through a 'Virtual clean room'), and operation of completed devices. Various subroutines will be designed to perform specific tasks. The algorithms used in these subprograms will be tested against empirical data. Hence, by an iterative process the software will be adapted to generate an accurate predictive overall model. The output will consist principally of optical, electronic and photovoltaic properties.
