Summary on Grant Application Form
The increasing realisation that biology has much to offer other disciplines has hardly been developed in engineering. It is exceedingly likely that the structures, materials and mechanisms utilised in living organisms can be categorised in such a way that they can be incorporated into TRIZ, a powerful problem-solving tool developed in Russia. TRIZ has a long track-record of successes in innovation in engineering, having been derived from the examination of more than 3,000,000 patents. It relies on understanding and analysis of functions. We shall assemble a database of functional biology (an approach to the science which has been developed over 150 years), modifying and adapting the concepts so that they can be incorporated into a TRIZ-like system, developing TRIZ further if biology exposes gaps and failings. The results will be incorporated into an expanded problem-solving computer system (such tools are currently available within engineering TRIZ) and tested with both engineering and biological problems. The expected outcome will be better problem solving in both engineering and biology, and the underpinning of the interfacial area where biological computing and bio-mechatronics are being developed. Since TRIZ can be applied in other areas (for instance, management) it is likely that there will be improvements in problem-solving and creativity here as well.
