The design and synthesis of anion receptors is an area of intense current interest. This project covers the development of anion receptors from square planar transition metal-pyridine complexes. The formation of these complexes from simple substituted pyridines is relatively straightforward and will quickly lead to a library of new anion receptors containing anion-binding sites of varying geometries and as the target receptors encompass a range of topologies, it is expected that they will constitute a class of anion receptor with inherently selective anion binding properties. More complex pyridine/bypyridine receptors for example may show selectivity towards aromatic anions such as benzoate. The anion binding ability of these new receptors will be studied by a variety of spectroscopic and structural techniques including 1H NMR and UV/Vis titration experiments and X-ray crystallography. More qualitative data may also be obtained through the use of mass spectroscopy competition experiments and if appropriate displacement assays. The project will then move on to the synthesis of electrochemically active sensors and luminescent sensors for anions as described in the proposal.
