Summary on Grant Application Form
This ROPA addresses the novel light-induced frustration we have observed in the etching behaviour of LiNb03. When crystalline samples are immersed in solutions of I-ff and HN03, the normal etching rate can be drastically modified through exposure to both c.w. and pulsed UV laser sources. To date we have observed, but only begun to characterize, this useful and highly functional technique for structuring such materials at the micron and sub-micron scale. The proposal concerns the systematics of such etchfrustration, including a full parametric study of the influence of wavelength, irradiance, doping levels, latency and structuring through partial frustration, and the use of this technique for production of periodic microstructures.
