Summary on Grant Application Form
Meshless methods are relatively new numerical techniques for the approximate integration of partial differential equations. The methods do not require a structured grid or mesh, instead a pseudo-particle interpolation method is used to compute smooth field variables. Consequently meshless methods are capable of modelling large deformations and discontinuities without the numerical problems inherent to for instance FEM. Meshless methods can be used on their own or combined with the Non-linear Finite Element method allowing for the strengths of both methods to be exploited simultaneously. The recent removal of inconsistency inherent to the Smooth Particle Method (first truly meshless method) via kernel renormalization/correction have resulted in a number of newly proposed meshless methods based on new types of space discretisation. The work plan proposed should result in further development and improved understanding on non-co-locational space discretisation and boundary condition treatment needed for this type of space discretization.
