Summary on Grant Application Form
Based on the results of a previous EPSRC grant (GR/L5490), this project is aimed at assessing the extent to which the low frequency structural vibration of porous plate can improve the attenuation of acoustic attenuating devices at low frequencies. The use of porous panels in the design of noise barriers and flow ducts will be studied. Measurement of the surface impedance of vibrating porous plates will be carried out. These tests will be performed in a free field and in a specialy designed large impedance tube. This will provide a better understanding of the contribution of the plate vibration to the absorption coefficient. Transmission and insertion loss experiments will be conducted in a flow duct containing porous plates and perforated porous plates. The effects of these on the duct-borne noise and on the vibration of the duct walls will be studied. The results will be compared to the noise reduction provided by baffle type silencers and by flow duct walls lined with viscoelastic layers. Theoretical and numerical studies of the influence of the structural vibration of a porous plate on its surface impedance and in the situation where the plate is inserted in a flow duct will be carried out.
