Summary on Grant Application Form |
Casing treatment is potentially a very effective method of extending the stable operating range off compressors and improving thrustto-weight ratios. The casing geometry is modified to alter the rotor blade tip flows so that stall can be delayed. Deficiencies in theunderstanding of the exact mechanisms, lack of knowledge for blade flutter effects, and noise generation aspects prevent thewidespread use of casing treatment, especially for civil aero-engines. It is proposed to take advantage of an existing code and parallelresearch work for developing casing treatment models in large industrial configurations. The aim is not only to demonstrate thefeasibility of such an undertaking but also to explain the physical mechanisms involved.
