Summary on Grant Application Form |
This is a proposal for a pump-priming new and highly speculative area of research into control of direction of crackpropagation, which is still at the proof of concept stage. A key aim is to make an important advance in basic sciencethrough studying interaction of elastic and thermo-elastic fields with tips of dynamic cracks. The applicant is interested in the new areaof research, which might lead to a novel fatigue management technique. The work is feasible, since the applicant (jointly with theproposed Co-Investigator) has already supervised a project student who demonstrated the effect of crack path deflection in plastics.
