The proposed programme is to explore and exploit blue diode laser souces for photonics. The first part of the programme will concentrate on advancing the tuning and spatial characteristics of the blue diode using novel extended cavity geometries. This includes the first ever use of a circularised blue diode and also a standard blue diode in a Littman cavity. The study of circularised blue diodes is expected to lead to improved beam characteristics as well as enhanced spectral characteristics.In the subsequent parts of the programme we will explore the use of blue laser diodes for measurements in indium deposition and for non-linear optics. An indium atomic beam will be developed. Laesr light will be used for precision spectroscopy and also to selectively remove one of the In isotopes for growth of isotopically pure structures. This is central for accurate development of novel micro-components. Further, this paves the way for atom lithography with indium atomic beams. By exploiting non-linear optics we plan to develop a source for mercury spectroscopy at 254nm which will be used subsequently for environmental sensing. This will be extended to other wavelengths by use of schemes including frequency doubling and sum frequency generation with red and near infra-red diode lasers.
