Summary on Grant Application Form |
Photonic crystal fibres have already been shown to outperform conventional optical fibres in several key respects. In this project we will investigate their potential for delivery of industrial laser beams. PCF offers several significant advantages over conventional fibres for this application, and we will be concentrating on three of these during the project. These are the ability to make single-mode fibres with a large mode area, the ability to make waveguiding fibres using only pure undoped silica, and the ability to make fibres in which light is guided down an air hole. The research programme will consist of modelling, fabricating and characterising a range of new and modified PCF structures, using both TIR and photonic band gap guidance mechanisms. Like this, we plan to improve the performance of structures which are already fairly well understood, develop an improved understanding of the limitations of air-guiding fibres, and open up a new field in the fabrication and analysis of multimode PCF designs. Throughout, the work will be guided by a set of milestones (see annex) and by continuing feedback from our industrial collaborators.
