Working together, the Departments of Chemical & Process Engineering and Chemistry of Sheffield University have, over the last two years, developed a world leading system to enable high throughput catalyst testing. Using funding from the Institute of Applied Catalysis a novel design of reactor has been constructed and demonstrated by the Engineers and a novel approach to analysis has been shown to be effective by the Chemists. However, more work is required to further transfer the skills in analysis from the Chemistry Department to the Chemical Engineering Department where the reactor will be tested. Furthermore. a parallel genetic algorithm has developed to search a library of catalysts for the optimum performance. The genetic algorithm has been shown to identify the best catalysts within a virtual library by testing only 2-3,% of the total library. It is imperative that we examine whether the genetic algorithm can search a real library within the same time frame.In this project Dr Owen Wilkin will need to work across the two discipline boundaries to develop the reactor commissioningskills necessary to bring this system to a state where it will yield the exciting scientific results of which it is capable.
