Inherent insensitivity, to target shape and remote, non-contact operation make Laser Vibrometers an ideal choice for rotor vibration measurements. Translational vibration measurements directed along the rotation axis are relatively straightforward but, for radial vibration measurements, the presence of a velocity component due to the rotation itself generates significant cross-sensitivities to speed fluctuations, including torsional vibrations, and motion perpendicular to the intended measurement. The severity of the effect is such that the Vibrometer output can be zero despite the presence of large vibration amplitudes.Measurements of rotational vibration can be made using a design of Laser Vibrometer that incorporates two parallel laser beams directed onto the target shaft. While torsional vibrations can be resolved satisfactorily, attempts to measure bending vibration on a rotating shaft give a cross-sensitivity to yaw in a pitch measurement and vice-versa. The problem is entirely analogous with that encountered in the radial vibration measurements.This project aims to use multiple measurements and a unique post-processing system to resolve the individual motion components of an illuminate rotor cross-section in 3 translational and 3 rotational senses. Errors resulting from the approximations made will be quantified, including the effects laser speckle, and the dedicated post-processing system will make the process transparent to the engineer.
