Summary on Grant Application Form |
A novel instrument is to be developed that will allow the material properties of the walls of cells and microcapsules to be characterised. Because high strain rates will be possible, high quality information will be obtained on wall viscoelastic behaviour and (where it occurs) water loss through porous walls. Amongst other applications, these will allow differences between growing and mature plant cell walls to be determined. The research will require a unique combination of micromanipulation, piezo-electric technology, a high-speed camera, image analysis, and finite element modelling.
