Summary on Grant Application Form |
To provide a firm foundation for the understanding of how microwave energy interacts with materials as a function of temperature, we aim to develop a new instrument for Quasi-simultaneous Microwave Dielectric Heating and Analysis (QMDHA). This will combine a single-mode microwave cavity with a computer-controlled generator, accurate temperature measurement and a network analyser. QMDHA will be applied to a carefully chosen selection of materials to demonstrate its value in providing fundamental information on microwave heating. The concept of combining accurately controlled microwave (linear) heating, temperature measurement and the in-situ quasi-simultaneous measurement of dielectric properties using a network analyser and the cavity perturbation method is entirely novel. Although far from trivial, the development of QMDHA, following our recent work on microwave thermal analysis (MWTA), is now entirely feasible and will be applicable to a very wide range of materials. We believe we will be able to produce controlled heating at rates up to 50 C min-' and provide dielectric measurements with high temperature resolution (0.1 C).
