Multiple source electrical impedance tomography coupled with Finite Element Mesh analysis offers the only means of making images of the absoh conductivity of a region. The distinguishability of anomalies in the region is maximised when optimal current patterns are used. Our experience of above is unique in Europe and matched in only one centre elsewhere. We wish to develop a new Tomograph which includes the technical features prototype device (OXBACT3) but which will be significantly more suited to use in intensive care. The new Tomograph will take advantage of recent developments in computer networking, in miniaturisation, in the use of low-power devices to offer a small, safe, easy-to-use imaging modality. The resolution is lower than other modalities, but the size, speed and low cost offer bedside continuous imaging which none of the alternatives are able do. The same instrument may be used by researchers in industrial process monitoring to make absolute measurements for the first time.The associated research programme uses the offered features of the Tomograph in a programme designed to improve the diagnosis of lung condi in very ill patients and to allow, for the first time, monitoring of the time-course of the response to treatments. It is also proposed that the programm extended to neonatal monitoring of Respiratory Distress Syndrome.
