Summary on Grant Application Form
There are no quantitative methods available for analysis of EMG signal that are reliable enough for diagnosing patients with neuromuscular diseas We have designed a method using wavelet analysis that has given excellent results in a recent pilot study. The purpose of this project is to devek method into a clincal diagnostic tool. The method uses local maxima analysis of the wavelet transform. We can detect very fine details in the signal and from them will extract paramel that characterise differences between normal, myopathic and neuropathic subjects. We have used just one parameter so far, but will extend this t examine patterns of local maxima within and across the transform scales. We will study the magnitude and pattern of these parameters as indicat the severity of a disease. There will be 30 subject initially in each of the three groups, adding new patients throughout the project as they attend th local EMG Clinic. We will design on-screen presentations of the wavelet parameters in a suitable form for clinicians to interpret during EMG exami of a patient. A real-time digital signal processing implementation of the software will then be evaluated in the EMG clinic in Liverpool.
