Describe the proposed research in about 200 words.The proposed study aims to develop a theoretical framework for the study of the appearance of kink bands which are found in layered structures that are loaded axially and confined orthogonally. A practical example in nature occurs in the axial compression of buried stratified geological layers where the confining pressure may be considered as the layer of rock that presses down on the layers (sometimes called overburden pressure). Other examples of kink band formations are found in compressed laminated composite materials, in the bending of wire and fibre ropes, and in tyre cords. Pilot experimental studies carried out earlier have revealed that this response is not amenable to the use of conventional methods of analysis. Simple models indicate impractical features such as loads tending toward infinity before triggering any instability. A way around this difficulty is to use the Maxwell stability criterion which uses energy balance principles in order that at least a lower bound on the critical load can be computed. The aim of the project would be primarily to conduct more sophisticated experiments such that the Maxwell criterion's usefulness can be validated as a theoretical and practical tool for design.
