We will select a small group of people with learning difficulties with whom we will work throughout the project. We will want to include a range of seventies so that we can establish if there is a problem or benefit of using video maps with different people. We wilt establish a simple assessment of independence bases on the amount of travel currently being made by each person, the extent to which they can make these journeys independently, and the extent to which they at tolerant to changes in the journey (e.g. a change of bus type). Two Plusbus vehicles operated by Hackney Community Transport will be fitted with suitable location systems and wired for connection to the hand-held PCs. Once the group of users has been identified and their independence evaluated, they will be asked to record suitable videos of journeys so that these can be written to the PC for subsequent use in the vehicles. They will then start making journeys using these vehicles and the video maps. The group will be monitored throughout the project so that seasonal and weather effects can be considered. We wil evaluate the approach on the basis of the success of the technology, changes in the number and type of journeys made and any changes in dependence observed in the sample. The final 3 months of the project will be to evaluate the outcomes and to determine the extent to which the technology could be developed further into a practical and useful travel training and wayfinding tool far people with learning difficulties. The project will provide proof of concept using currently available technology brae detennining if further techrxxogical work should be anted out.
