Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is now standard for electrical printed circuit boards and backplanes to be multi-level with large numbers of interconnect layers linked by through-vias. By comparison, planar lightwave circuits, as their name implies, are dominantly two-dimensional in layout. This is highly restrictive, imposing serious constraints on the topology of integrated guided-wave optical links. By avoiding the restricted planar geometry, the density of co-packaged optoelectronic devices would be greatly increased. The purpose of this project is to create and assess three-dimensional optical guided-wave structures using interconnected multiple polymer waveguide layers. Using this technology, we aim to provide not only an optical wiring capability but, at the same time, a platform for compact integration of active optoelectronic chips. In particular, we plan to explore the flip-chip integration of components such as detector and VCSEL arrays. Finally we shall be working on the packaging of our 3DLCs (3-D lightwave circuits) with standard fibre ribbon connectors.
