This research is intended to show that it is feasible to produce simultaneous, high-quality images of multiple 2-d slices from a 3-dimension object field whilst preserving true-colour quality. Previous techniques, developed by the applicant in collaboration with others, have used a distorted diffraction grating to obtain simultaneous imaging of multiple 2-d layers of a 3-d object field on a single, pixeAated detector. It has been shown that the chromatic distortion can be reduced, but not eliminated, by pre-dispersion using a pair of blazed gratings. This work will examine the use of more complex, but still low-cost, diffractive structures to achieve true-colour imaging of multiple layers for bio-medical and hyperspectral applications. Non-diffractive structures will be used as a fall-back position. In addition to the development of new diffractive-optical elements to produce multiple 2- images slices from a 3-d object field, the range of bio-medical applications of true-colour 3-d imaging, including retinal imaging, in-vivo microscopy, endoscopy etc., will be investigated and the applications prioritised in terms of cost and impact with a view to further research aimed at optimising the techniques for the various applications.
