Summary on Grant Application Form
On-line flame condition monitoring has been identified by the Technology Foresight's Energy Panel as an underpinning science which plays an important part in improving the quality and efficiency of combustion processes. This project aims to develop an advanced sensor system suitable for the on-line, continuous measurement and characterisation of a pulverised coal or gas fired flame. A novel approach, based upon optical sensing, digital imaging and image processing techniques, will be applied to determine a range of flame parameters, including size, spreading angle, ignition point, luminosity, uniformity, flicker and temperature.Following the design and implementation of a prototype system, extensive experiments will be conducted on a gas fired combustion test rig in the Combustion Research Laboratory at the University of Greenwich. Following thorough technical preparations, a series of strategically designed experimental tests will be performed on Powergen's 1 MWth Combustion Test Facility over a wide range of combustion conditions including the combustion of low-volatile coals and coal blends. Quantitative relationships between the flame parameters measured and the corresponding combustion process data will be identified.
