Summary on Grant Application Form |
:The proposed EPSRC research on designing broadband amplifiers (1350-1680 nm) aims to underpin the scientific aspects of device design and fabrication, which is primarily supported by NORTEL NETWORKS at Leeds. In the EPSRC programme, our goal is to investigate the structural and spectroscopic aspects of RE-doped (Nd , TM , Er ) tellurite glasses. These are new compositions, for which some results are presented in the Case for Support. The methodologies adopted for structural analysis are: low- and high-frequency Raman spectroscopy, MAS NMR, and XPS. Site-selection and time-resolved spectroscopy will be used for characterising the sites for dopant ions and competing radiative and non-radiative processes. Thermal and rheological characterisation will provide conditions for optimising the fibre drawing. In our PhD programme at Leeds, we developed thermally stable Te02 glasses, which do not exhibit any crystallisation. It is our scientific view that there are a number of stable compositions, which need to be analysed by investigating their structures and spectroscopy. By using such glasses, low-loss single-mode fibres (-200 dB/km) will be fabricated in the EPSRC research programme for designing broadband amplifiers, which will operate in the 1350 nm and 1680 nm. NORTEL NETWORKS will provide support in the area of fibre and gain band characterisations in the EPSRC programme. The amplifier design and fabrication is a resource intensive programme of work. NORTEL has committed a major contribution of resources for developing broadband amplifiers, without which new amplifier design is not feasible.
