Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will develop an advanced language and support mechanisms for enterprises and individuals to specify their policies and preferences for call processing - particularly Internet telephony. The project will contribute to the development of programmable networks by allowing flexible definition, control and analysis of user communications services. The research programme has been formulated in response to requirements defined by Mitel, and will be conducted in close collaboration with them. The work will build on successful methods and tools demonstrated by the Investigators on a range of current communications services and networks. The project will develop a call control language based on user policies, will develop tools for analysing conflicts in policies, and will build server support for executing policies in a realistic environment. The methods and tools will support user-friendly descriptions of call control using a flexible Policy Description Language (PDL). PDL will be executed in servers supporting the Service Initiation Protocol (SIP). The pragmatics of call control will be complemented by off-line and on-line analysis of policy/service conflicts. The project approach will be evaluated in a test environment supported by Mitel that exploits the new capabilities of packet-switched and wireless communications.
