Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to construct a range of novel polymeric materials that encapsulate irreversibly one or more types of quantum dot within their polymeric matrices. The method of encapsulation that we have devised should result in the encapsulated quantum dots being protected by a chemically impervious polymer coating and consequently these materials should readily withstand exposure to a wide variety of solvents and reagents. In addition, the polymer coating will contain chemically reactive sites. Therefore the materials we propose to construct may be used as supports for solid phase synthetic organic chemistry without compromising the physical integrity or optical properties of the encapsulated quantum dots that they contain. We believe that these materials will form the basis of a hugely powerful optical encoding strategy for generic application in encoding chemical entities - a strategy that we believe will be of especial relevance to combinatorial chemists.
