Summary on Grant Application Form |
The design of an innovative suprapubic urine collection system needs to be addressed in conjunction with a new bladder management protocol to reduce morbidity and offer an effective and aesthetic alternative for patients with long term catheterisation.A suprapubic port, comprising a cutaneous flange connecting with an indwelling portal tube (manufactured from established biocompatible materials) into which a variety of inner fittings could be introduced, would provide a neat entry to the bladder. The suprapubic port could ideally be readily manageable by patient or carer and enable easy access to the bladder utilising 'project developed' auxiliary bladder management equipment (endoscopic inspection and stone removal sets). Designs will be developed by systematic methods involving the use of computer simulation: prototypes will be tested using current and modified anatomical models prior to patient trials.
