A detailed investigation into microscopic and macroscopic porous medium approaches are proposed to address the lack of understanding that currently exists in the area of flow through complex structures. To remove the difficulties in the analysis of flow through such complex geometries as turbo-machines,electronic circuit boards and heating and cooling equipment in the process industry and domestic applications, an in depth analysis into both microscopic and macroscopic flow and heat transfer in 3D cases will be considered.Such a study will lead to a proper understanding of the averaged,porous medium flow model and could open a new approach to simulating flow through complex geometries. The development of a correlation between the microscopic and macroscopic analyses could simplify design procedures for flow through comple structures, both man made and natural. A 3D incompressible flow code will be developed based on the Characteristic Based Split method for single-phase flows and this code will be extended to solve generalised porous medium equations.Problems will be solved both microscopically and macroscopically and the results will be analysed to understand the differences between these approaches.Possible changes in the macroscopic equations or problem formualtions will be considered in order to reduce the differences between the microscopic and macroscopic approaches.
