Summary on Grant Application Form |
The consortium wants to undertake research on how to develop compact (around 10cm maximum) aerials that will receive DAB signals both on 'Band III' used in the UK and the 'L Band' used in many other countries. It is also desirable to make this aerial, as far as is possible, transmit and receive on the UMTS telephone band. This is because it is highly undesirable to have one large aerial on a portable device, and even LESS desirable to have two such aerials on a device! However there as a substantial spectum 'spacing' between the bands desired, which makes the aerial design very complex. More specifically, the objectives of the project are to demonstrate the feasibility of reception of data services on a portable device using DAB, together with the feasiblity of UMTS reception and transmission from the same antenna. A `fallback' objective, if the use of one antenna proves impossible for both tasks is the `integrated' approach where it may appear that only one antenna is present, but two physical antenna are arranged in close proximity in one 'package'.
