Summary on Grant Application Form |
This two-year project will undertake research into the use of visually monitored supportive environments for the elderly living alone. In particular, it will investigate the applicability and feasibility of various levels of automatic monitoring using intelligent visual sensors. It will initiate new, as well as build on existing, collaboration with organisations that will provide a strong user perspective. The project will identify the requirements of all users of supportive home environments including occupants and carers. Requirements gathering will make use of dramatised scenarios and technology simulations. The project will build and evaluate a prototype monitoring system to demonstrate the technological feasibility of the proposed approach. Previous work on visual monitoring of human activity VAR form a basis for prototype development which will concentrate on tracking the occupant in context and automatically interpreting behaviour ways that are fully informed by requirements analysis. The prototype demonstrator along with the requirements and design guidelines produced by the study are intended to 'lay the foundations' for subsequent development of supportive environments.
