Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed work aims to explore adaptive patterns in doped liquid crystals and their applications to develop their role for photonic processing and switching. Photorefractive, both dynamic and permanent, patterns can be written in liquid crystals using optical methods and their diffraction can be controlled by an applied electric field. The proposed research will determine how strong, photorefractive-enhanced reorientation of liquid crystal molecules can be manipulated to control and route light. It will also address the issue of development of adaptive and dynamically addressable liquid crystal components to perform photonic switching, diffraction and polarisation selectivity. This interesting problem has not yet been fully explored either experimentally or theoretically. The proposed research will demonstrate a new, adventurous concept in liquid crystal devices as well as provide a fundamental and comprehensive study of photorefractive liquid crystals. The successful outcome of the proposal will have a real impact on technology, and at last realise the long-anticipated potential of a wider application of liquid crystals, in particular in optical telecommunications. The integrated, interdisciplinary programme of work will rely on the expertise of groups in Exeter and Southampton and involves a high degree of collaboration.
