Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will investigate the relationships between the various aspects of a classroom environment which contribute to the hearing, listening and learning experience of hearing and hearing impaired primary school children. It will be carried out by a team of acousticians and educational psychologists who will focus on the needs of hearing impaired children by considering integrated classrooms in which hearing and hearing inpaired children are taught together, and specialist units for teaching hearing impaired children. The following aspects will be investigated: acoustic design and speech intelligibilty in classrooms for hearing and hearing impaired children, use of speech reinforcement systems in classrooms, teachers' awareness of the needs of hearing impaired children, use of appropriate teaching strategies, and incidence of voice problems among teachers. Children's perceptions of the acoustic environment of their classrooms will also be studied. The project will be carried out using classroom observation, acoustic testing, speech intelligibility tests of children and adults, and questionnaire surveys of pupils and teachers.
