Summary on Grant Application Form |
This investigation addresses the application of interactive design technologies including virtual reality, in comparision to conventional CAD processes. Thorough evaluation of the virtual reality approach will be undertaken with respect to current industrial methods, with regard to its usability as a design tool, its human-computer interaction and its effectiveness in the generation of manufacturing, scheduling and other downstream production information. A new virtual design metaphor is proposed that will be subjected to substantial industrial evaluation.A key focus of this work will be to investigate what particular aspects of virtual environments improve, or hinder, the design experience; for example, the sense of presence, immersion or the user interface. The knowledge gained will be applied to a specific and important application domain, namely cable harness design. Attention will remain on the generic as well as the specific outcomes, thus enabling an improved understanding of the impact of virtual technologies on the product development process, especially with a view to concurrent engineering practice.
