Summary on Grant Application Form |
A recent disvoery in our lab shows that Ag-doped bioactive gel-glasses slowly release Ag+, a power ful antibacterial agent, at very low (PPM) concentrations. This unique gel-glass has an inhibitory effect on growth of gram(+)and gram(-) bacteria with cell populations decreased 5 to 6 orders of magnitude relative to control cultures. the minimum inhibitory concentrations for E.coli, P. aeruginosa and S,. aureus are in the range of 0.05 to 0.2mg/ml. This project will establish the scientify fabsis for cotnrolling the concentration and rate of relearse of Ag from the bioactive gel-glass matrix so that the material can be used topically to comabt infections of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria commonly associated with implant surgery. Careful control of the rate of release of the antimicrobial agent may also make it possible to use this material as a coating on protheses to prevent infection.
