Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main objectives of the research are to provide a combined, calibrated atomic oxygen and VUVIX-ray radiation experiment for the ESA MEDET materials and space environment module for the International Space Station (ISS), and to analyse the results of the Zn0 atomic oxygen sensor to be flown on DERA satellite STRV-1 c, currently scheduled to be launched in October/November 2000.A combined atomic oxygen and radiation experiment has been accepted for inclusion on the ESA MEDET experiment for the ISS. The experiment, comprising renewable Zn0 and carbon atomic oxygen sensors, and AIGaN VUV photo-detectors and silicon photodiode X-ray radiation sensors, has been defined and passed the MEDET preliminary design review. The main objective of this proposal is to finalise the design and build the experiment to ESA deadlines for integration on MEDET, and to characterise the various sensors using test facilities at Southampton,Cranfield , ESTEC and ONERA.The analysis of the STRV-1 c experiment (built under EPSRC award GR/U35874) will involve interpreting the resistance measurements from the satellite sensors, and analysing them using the orbital parameters provided by the STRV team together with the results of the calibration studies performed in the ESTEC ATOX simulation source. Testing of the STRV-1c flight spare unit in the ATOX facility and comparing the results with the flight data also forms part of the proposed experimental programme.
