Summary on Grant Application Form
The quasinormal modes of a black hole pay an important role in the way that the hole responds to any external disturbance. This project aims to reconstruct the quasinormal modes of a black hole using the continued fraction technique and to visualise the results using Wigner functions. It should be possible to relate the quasinormal modes to classical orbits around the black hole.According to a conjecture arising from superstring theory, the quasinormal modes of black holes in five dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime are related to thermal properties of conformal field theories in four dimensions. The frequencies calculated so far show unexplained behaviour, which I plan to investigate.
