Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project aims to investigate the dynamics of assembly and the extent of long range order for self organised arrangements of nanoscale gold particles in the range2.5 - 8nm. The interactions between particles will be mediated through interdigitation of alkyl thiol molecular chains absorbed onto the surface of each particle. The dynamic processes will be studied using a specially designed scattering cell to allow parameters such as sample temperature, gas pressure, sample type, cluster size, ligand length, and solvent to be varied. These are all predicted to have an effect on the kinetics of assembly and consequently on the quality of the arrangement. The quality of the assembled nanomaterial will be established using grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering to reveal the separation and long range order of the particles and x-ray reflectivity to determine the roughness of the layer in a direction perpendicular to the sample surface. Wide angle x-ray scattering measurements will be used to find the atomic arrangement within the particles. The quality of the resultant structures will be correlated with the parameters and compared with films manufactured by a second technique. This involves allowing the clusters to self-assemble at the liquid-air interface in a Langmuir trough and then depositing it onto a solid substrate by slowly drawing the sample through the assembled film
